Chaffers Marina opened in 1993 as part of the redevelopment of Wellington’s Lambton Harbour, transforming a corner of the working waterfront into a marina in the heart of the capital. Today, its 184 berths, ranging from 10 to 20 metres, sit alongside Clyde Quay Wharf and welcome racing crews, fishing enthusiasts, live-aboards and casual cruisers alike.
The marina operates under a Deed of Licence issued in 1993 by Lambton Harbour Management Limited, now Wellington Waterfront Limited. It is privately owned: each berth holder owns shares in Chaffers Marina Holdings Ltd, the parent company of Chaffers Marina Ltd. Those shares carry the right to a berth licence, and the directors are elected by shareholders at the AGM.
In 2019, shareholders ratified the Long-Term Asset Management Plan, setting out a programme to progressively replace the marina’s piles, piers and services. This ongoing investment will keep the marina in good working order through to 2058, when all berth licences reach the end of their term.

The Long-Term Asset Management Plan
The marina’s licence runs until 30 June 2058. Adopted by shareholders in 2019, the Long-Term Asset Management Plan (LTAMP) began as a staged plan to renew the piers, piles, walkways and wavescreen. It has since developed into an ongoing programme covering all marina assets, including the electrical mains and services.
Work is prioritised according to safety needs and asset condition, informed by inspections and engineering advice, and funded through capital contributions, licence fees, and asset and maintenance fees. The Board reviews the programme as needs change, while shareholders receive regular updates on progress and spending, along with supporting reports.
