The Board has approved revised by-laws for Chaffers Marina, following a review to make sure they reflect how the marina operates today and meet current legal requirements. The main changes:
- Speed limit: reduced from 5 knots to 3 knots, to cut wake and protect the pontoons
- Hull and biofouling: berth holders must keep hulls free of significant biofouling and be able to show their antifouling or cleaning history on request
- Drones: flying, launching or landing a drone over or within the marina needs the Manager’s prior written consent, in line with the Civil Aviation Act 2023
- Security, CCTV and privacy: a new section sets out how access control and CCTV operate, and how personal information is handled under the Privacy Act 2020
- Contractors: must comply with the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 and the marina’s site rules and permit-to-work requirements
- Enforcement and complaints: a clearer, step-by-step process for breaches, with a formal complaints and Board review process
Why hull care matters: a fouled hull affects performance, and it’s a biosecurity risk. Invasive species such as Mediterranean fanworm travel on fouled hulls, and Wellington Harbour has been affected. The marina’s boat lift makes regular cleaning easy, and berth holders’ boatlift levy can be redeemed against haul-out costs within 24 months. MPI has up-to-date guidance at mpi.govt.nz.
