The mains power replacement is part of the Long-Term Asset Management Plan (LTAMP). Once complete, it will meet the marina’s long-term electrical needs and greatly reduce the risk of a mains failure. The work is in two stages.
Stage one: substation to termination pit (complete)
Trenching was completed in March. Wellington Electricity then confirmed access to the substation, and Morepork Limited laid the new cables from the substation to the termination pit at the end of April, finishing the job in two days with no disruption to marina operations.
This means that if the mains supply fails, the marina can now connect to the new cable quickly, which makes operations much more resilient.
Stage two: termination pit to the submains cabinet
Stage two starts once the new walkway reaches the existing submains cabinet between Piers B and C, where the cabinet will be replaced with a new unit. The new cables will run underneath the new walkway, so there is no need to work behind the old wavescreen and no work has to be done twice. We expect this stage in late 2027.
